Woman arrested for shooting dead man transporting cows

NEW DELHI: Police in Rajasthan have arrested two people accused of shooting dead a man transporting cows last week in Alwar, ANI reported on Wednesday. "The investigation is on and two have already been arrested," ANI quoted Rajasthan home minister Gulab Chand Kataria as saying. The minister stressed that "if someone kills anyone, he must not be branded as 'gau rakshak,' but as a convict." 35-year-old dairy farmer Ummar Khan was shot dead and his fellow passenger critically injured after being allegedly beaten up by self-styled 'gau rakshaks,' or cow vigilantes in Alwar's Govdingarh area.s

Khan's bullet-ridden body was found on the railway tracks on Friday evening. According to the police, there were three persons in the pickup truck being driven Jawed Khan, who had managed to escape. "The deceased and two others were transporting cows inside a pickup truck. As soon as they entered into the limits of Govindgarh, a mob of about 7 people waylaid their vehicle and began harassing them. They were calling themselves gau rakshaks and fired at Ummar Khan," said the kin of the deceased. Earlier this year in April, a 51-year-old dairy farmer from Haryana, Pehlu Khan, was beaten to death in Alwar's Behror area. (With inputs from agencies)
