Major storm today on my website!

The mountain areas in Fayette and Westmoreland counties received from 3 to 6 inches of snow by Monday afternoon, but the lower elevations around Connellsville received less than 3 inches, according to the National Weather Service in Moon.

An inch or less was expected to accumulate overnight into Tuesday morning, but no more than a trace was expected during the day, said Brad Rehak, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Moon.

“There will be little accumulation with a high in the mid-20s,” Rehak said.

He said the temperature will drop to about 10 early Wednesday, but it will be mostly sunny with highs in the upper 20s.

Rehak said he did not expect any major snowstorms in this area until at least the middle of next week.

Few snow totals were available for Fayette County, but according to the NWS website Champion, on the border of Westmoreland and Fayette counties, received 5.7 inches recorded at 4:29 p.m.; Farmington received 3.1 inches recorded at 5.38 p.m.

Rehak said the heavy bands of snow had passed by about 8 p.m. Monday. He did not expect anything beyond light snow and flurries for the rest of the night.

Road problems seemed to be confined to the mountain areas during the day Monday.

Vernon Ohler, Connellsville's public works foreman, said his road crews had no problems because most of the precipitation fell as rain and the temperature remained above freezing through much of the day.

That condition changed in the evening as the temperature dropped and roads became coated with ice and snow.

A warning of wet and freezing conditions on Route 119 in Fayette County was listed on the PennDOT website at 8:30 p.m.

A supervisor at Fayette County 911 said there were several minor traffic accidents in the northern areas of the county Monday evening.

However, there was nothing major, and no injuries were reported, she said.
